In a future age – perhaps as early as next week – Brooklyn will be mentioned alongside Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago as one of the major cities in the history of American music. As the borough’s off-the-scale hip factor continues to grow, one needs a score card to keep track of all the great bands emerging from Brooklyn. Out of this bustling scene comes My Best Fiend, lurching into the fray with their excellent new CD release, In Ghostlike Fading. Unleashing waves of immersive organic swirl, My Best Fiend carries the defiant tradition of the Velvet Underground into the 21st century. From a skeletal framework of sparse guitars, light layers of keys and lilting vocals, songs swell from the ground up, eventually building to a trance-inducing cacophony. Hypnotic clouds of stark beauty are conjured in “ODVIP”, its chorus a choir of ghost children chanting. The vocal performance here is a juxtaposition of conflicting sentiments, echoing the tug of war inherent to the junky’s doomed romance, ebbing out of focus and back again.
