In an industry where genre labels grow more useless and misleading by the day, the phrase “New Orleans music” still means the same thing it always did: Let the good times roll. An all-inclusive soundtrack to a never-ending party, New Orleans music encompasses Blues, Jazz, Cajun, Doo Wop, dreamy ballads, brass bands and more. Oozing all of the aforementioned from every pore, veteran New Orleans singer & pianist Jon Cleary is the perfect leader for a session that pays tribute to the songs of another New Orleans legend, the great Allen Toussaint. The production rings pure and hot here, showing Cleary’s innate understanding that the trick to capturing the essence of this music lies not in knob-twirling but in performance and feel. And right from its first notes this album is so funky you can smell it. Reminding us that the piano is a percussion instrument, Cleary assaults the keys with love and grace. Even more remarkable still is that Cleary plays almost every instrument on the album. A rugged and shimmering solo piano arrangement of “Fortune Teller” closes out this brilliant set. It’s a glorious cacophony, insinuating the sound of a house of crystal cards crumbling in reverse.
